Around 10% of the population suffers from Scheuermann's kyphosis and idiopathic scoliosis. Motivated by his own experience , student Tadeáš Řáha launched a campaign focused on early detection.

Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and Barry Sharpless were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their research on tools for building molecules. Their findings will contribute to the development of processes that simplify functional chemistry. 

Two Czech scientists who have contributed significantly to global research with their lifetime of work, one scientific transfer project and six young scientific talents. These are this year's awards from the Neuron Foundation for Science. Six of the nine awards have gone to Charles University.

“I have always been fascinated by basic mechanisms and to understand how things work inside the cell,” says cell biologist Jiři Bártek, the most cited Czech scientist, awarded an honorary doctorate from Charles University in 2022.

Miroslav Bárta from the Czech Institute of Egyptology at CU has received great international recognition, invited this year to join the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The AAA&S has existed since 1780: George Washington himself was a member.

“It is an unprecedented success,” says Martin Loebl, the head of the Department of Applied Mathematics at Charles University, regarding Hans Raj Tiwary. He has been awarded the Gödel Prize - one of the most prestigious awards in the field of computer science.

The Neuron Foundation this year recognised numerous top scientists incl. experts from Charles University. The award for lifelong contribution to science went to Czech internationally-known chemist František Švec from the Faculty of Pharmacy.
