Work groups from six universities within the 4EU+ European university alliance met recently in Copenhagen to move forward with some of the project’s key aims.

Monday saw the start of a two-day meeting of Charles University’s International Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting evaluating research and future progress at the institution on a number of different fronts. On the agenda, for example, were the university’s Primus program for funding exceptional young scientists as well as the work and progress of individual faculties. ...

Charles University, founded on 7 April 1348, is celebrating its 674th birthday. On this occasion, the university awarded five scientists Donatio Universitatis Carolinae prizes. They are worth a financial reward of one million crowns.

To date more than 140 promising young scientists have already received Primus support, granting them independence and the chance to start new research groups at CU. On Thursday, 80 new “Primus” hopefuls met at the Primus Day conference.

The whole world celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February. This year, Charles University decided to celebrate "internationally". We reached out to international female scientists working at Charles University and bring you two dozen experiences and stories.

CU this week hosted a unique event bringing together students, staff, as well as 4EU+ Alliance reps for a special day at the Carolinum. The alliance has made significant strides in creating new opportunities in education, research, and mobility.

The Centre for Knowledge and Technology Transfer at CU brings together students from different faculties . Interdisciplinary approaches can inspire new solutions. The centre hosted an event capping a new course called Innovation in Humanitarian Aid.

“I have always been fascinated by basic mechanisms and to understand how things work inside the cell,” says cell biologist Jiři Bártek, the most cited Czech scientist, awarded an honorary doctorate from Charles University in 2022.

Dictionary.com chose “woman” as its word of the year for 2022, an apt choice which could apply to Charles University. In February, for the first time in its history, the position of rector was taken up by a woman: professor and  scientist Milena Králíčková. The events of 2022 demonstrated the importance and necessity of science more than ever.

"Many think that only about half of medical doctors believe in vaccines against Covid-19. In fact, it's 90 percent! Communicating this is a simple way of increasing vaccination rates," summarize Michal Bauer and Julie Chytilová, co-authors of a new study in Nature.

Anežka Kuzmičová is a researcher at Charles University who, for the last two years, has conducted creative research into children’s reading. Scientists often study or emphasise literacy and language acquisition but there has been relatively little study of what children actually experience as they read.

“I want to be as productive and helpful within society as possible,” says Quynh Anh Vu, a Hanoi native and graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy. Quynh Anh received the Rector's Award recognising the best science graduates in April.

A joint seed-funding programme between Charles University and the University of St Andrews is an excellent means of bringing together top researchers, say Joseph North from the elite Scottish university and Jaromír Soukup from strategic partner Charles University. Martin Setvín has truly had a great run lately. In 2023 he received an ERC CZ grant for his research on polarons in solids. Last autumn, Science Advances published the latest discoveries by his team. And he capped 2024 with an ERC Consolidator Grant!

Dr. Erik Meijaard is a highly-recognised ecologist and conservationist who has been based in Borneo since the early 1990s.  Last semester, students were able to attend his course on conservation practices and management at Charles University’s Faculty of Science, based on studies and research he and his team have conducted for years.

The physicist Tim Verhagen comes from the Netherlands but has been working in the Czech Republic for eight years, currently at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. He has just received a prestigious ERC Starting Grant for his research into new materials – “2D-sandwiches”.

Last February saw the cancellation of Venkov 2021 due to the pandemic. The popular conference hosted by the Department of Social Geography and Regional Development and organised by Dr. Radim Perlín, has always been an opportunity for regional stakeholders to connect with researchers and government planners. Luckily, this year, it returned.

“We really had no idea how big a role the Aborigines played,” say Petr Kuneš. An associate professor at CU, Dr. Kuneš was a member an international team that examined how colonisation changed vegetation management in Australia.

The Olympics are not just about sports and the joy of winning: sociologists also look at the role that money, politics and globalisation play. “Basically, all Olympics suffer some controversy,” says Matouš Veselský, a sociologist at the Faculty of Humanities.

Friday, 11 February, marks the seventh International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrating the role of women in the scientific world and promoting gender equality. What do women scientists at Charles University enjoy the most about their work and what kind of challenges did they face?
