Professor Harvey Weiss of Yale University co-organized an international Egyptology conference in Prague. He is known for his pioneering work in environmental archaeology and for advancing the theory that mega-droughts played a central role in the collapse of ancient civilizations.

Professor Michael Grätzel, the celebrated chemist behind the invention of dye-sensitised solar cells, was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from CU. The accolade marks the 16th honorary degree in his distinguished career.

"Academics of the 20th century were personalities. We should be inspired by them and support originality and the search for one's own path, because it leads to knowledge and great ideas," says Libuše Heczková from the Faculty of Arts.

The final Friday in September saw the return of Czech European Researchers' Night, where scientific and educational institutions across the Czech Republic open their doors to curious visitors. Charles University, of course, took part.

"The psychology of poverty is still a relatively new research direction at the interface of economics and psychology," explains the scientific and partnership couple Julie Chytilová and Michal Bauer from Charles University.They present more in one minute.

"Our long-term research is devoted to the development of new technologies for the screening of pregnancy complications during the first trimester," says Ilona Hromadníková, a physician/scientist from the Third Faculty of Medicine.

"We explore the extremes of the vertebrate eye. Deep-sea fish are very interesting in that they have many extreme adaptations, from which we can then draw conclusions for our human ventricular eye," explains evolutionary biologist Zuzana Musilová from the Faculty of Science of Charles University. "The era of superspecialists is coming to an end, the future belongs to graduates who are able to connect individual disciplines and find solutions to complex problems," says molecular biologist Jan Černý from the Faculty of Science.

"Cybersecurity is not just about technical knowledge, but includes a wide range of disciplines incl. diplomacy, international law, int'l relations or psychology," explains Lucie Kadlecová in one minute, who returned to the Czech Republic after working abroad.

Explain your research clearly in one minute. This is exactly the task given to scientists from Charles University in the new video series Science at CU. The first to take on the task was mathematician Erin Carson, who is inventing new algorithms for supercomputers.

It has been almost two years since the Russian attack on Ukraine began at dawn on 24 February 2022. Ahead of the sombre anniversary, Forum reports on the work of Ukrainian scientists and scholars at Charles University.

"Our goal is to understand the limits of what the vertebrate eye is capable of! By studying the eye of deep-sea fish, we can also learn many useful insights about the human eye" says CU's Zuzana Musilová  - awarded a prestigious ERC Consolidator grant.

Biologist Petr Pyšek is the proud holder of the prestigious Czech Head award recognising his life’s work. He received the award in 2022 for the study of invasive organisms. “Invasive ecology is a field that examines how humans spread plants and animals around the world and guages their impact on nature,” he explains.

"I enjoy finding the essence of biological processes," says Lenka Hálová, a graduate of Charles University who has been based in Manchester for fifteen years. Her research focuses on the regulation of the cell cycle, the disruption of which leads, for example, to cancer. Among other things, she is very active in the non-profit organization Czech School & Community in Manchester.

The Neuron Foundation this year recognised numerous top scientists incl. experts from Charles University. The award for lifelong contribution to science went to Czech internationally-known chemist František Švec from the Faculty of Pharmacy.
