The Students’ Majáles—a celebration of spring, student life and free-spiritedness—returned to Prague for the 13th time. On 1 May, 'royal' entourages gathered at Kampa to take part in the traditional parade, a festive procession that also served as a competition for the title of Majáles King or Queen.
As in previous years, the main programme unfolded at Kampus Hybernská, where the colourful parade—accompanied by music and refreshments—arrived shortly after midday. The route passed familiar landmarks: the New Stage of the National Theatre, Charles Square, and Old Town Square. At each stop, student teams faced a variety of tasks, from sporting challenges to public speaking and mock-negotiations.
A record number of royal delegations entered the contest: the Braník Knights (Faculty of Arts, Charles University), the Flowering Fruit Flies (Faculty of Education), the Workers of Subcultures (Faculty of Humanities), the Zemanites (Faculty of Social Sciences), Matfyz in Black International (Faculty of Mathematics and Physics), and the Rector’s College (Faculty of Arts).
Na piazzettě Národního divadla proběhla pohybová
At the piazzetta of the National Theatre, contestants competed in a physical challenge including matchstick throwing, ball juggling, timed beer drinking and puzzle-solving.
“At the will of the gods, we kings proclaim that the canteens of Carolinum should flow with golden nectar. That students may stable their steeds in the gardens of the arts,” declared the Braník Knights on Charles Square, appealing to voters with theatrical oratory.
At Old Town Square, an improvised international trade market took shape. Candidates had to barter a toothpick with foreign “diplomats” in exchange for anything of greater value. Some managed to secure coins, banknotes, or sweets.
A festival atmosphere at Kampus Hybernská
Upon arrival at Kampus Hybernská, the event was officially opened by Eva Voldřichová Beránková, Charles University's Vice-Rector for International Affairs. “I believe moments like these belong to student life,” said Věra Sokolová, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, joined by the deans of the Faculties of Science and Catholic Theology.
The final competition challenged teams to prepare the tastiest dish from a fixed set of ingredients: an apple, kohlrabi, bread roll, water, and sugar. Following the culinary contest, the winner was announced: Vašek Šlik, also known as Prince Braník of the Braník Knights (student society Archeoffuk), was crowned King of Students’ Majáles.
Kampus Hybernská then transformed into a lively showcase of student culture. The main stage hosted bands that embraced experimentation, offering genres from indie to funky rock.
For those seeking a quieter experience, there were theatre performances and improvisation workshops. The programme also featured expert talks and debates on pressing issues both within and beyond academia. Tech-savvy visitors could attend a hands-on workshop on DIY computer repairs.
The site buzzed with activity from student societies and NGOs. Curious visitors were encouraged to engage with student representatives, learn about their causes, projects, and how to get involved. Majáles truly welcomed everyone—regardless of age, field of study, or even whether one studies at Charles University at all. All it takes is to show up, take in the atmosphere and remember: spring belongs to love, creativity and the joy of life.
Also at United Islands
Charles University is also participating in another Prague event currently underway. Until Saturday, visitors can find its stand at the United Islands festival, where they can learn about the 4EU+ Alliance and international study opportunities. The stand includes a debate zone focused on youth mental health, a quiz area with games about European flags and capitals (with small prizes on offer), and the We Are Europe platform, which highlights how the European Union functions—and how individuals can engage with it.
A Presence at Prague’s Majáles Festival
Charles University also made an appearance at the open-air Prague Majáles festival, held on Saturday 26 April at Letňany Airport. Alongside major music acts, student societies representing various Charles University faculties were present.
