Jan Velinger

Studied film directing at FAMU in Prague and began in current affairs in commercial television in 1996. Worked as a reporter and presenter at the English service of Czech Radio for more than sixteen years, before joining Charles University’s media team in June 2018. He is responsible for the English edition of Forum Magazine and Forum Radio podcasts.

On Tuesday, Charles University welcomed renowned political scientist Ivan Krastev to deliver a famous lecture: A Hall of Broken Mirrors at the Patriots’ Hall at the historic Carolinum building. The talk reflected on the future of the international order in the face of Russian aggression in Ukraine.

CU and St Andrews: Successful research

A joint seed-funding programme between Charles University and the University of St Andrews is an excellent means of bringing together top researchers, say Joseph North from the elite Scottish university and Jaromír Soukup from strategic partner Charles University. They outline the project in Forum.

To date more than 140 promising young scientists have already received Primus support, granting them independence and the chance to start new research groups at CU. On Thursday, 80 new “Primus” hopefuls met at the Primus Day conference.

This Friday marks one year since Russia launched its brutal invasion of Ukraine. The war, referred to euphemistically as a special military operation by Putin, has ground on, claiming countless lives and seeing millions escape abroad.

Volunteering helps you focus on priorities

The day may come when she will fulfil her childhood dream and become a musical star; but for the moment, Karolína Mikysková is focusing on her studies in psychology at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University. She is also involved in charity and volunteer work, which includes helping cancer patients.

We waste resources and throw away far too much food unnecessarily. The Smart Food educational project, aiming to improve pupils' knowledge about food waste, is being tested at five primary schools. The teaching materials should later be widely available.

Photographing the ancient world

He first glimpsed the ancient world through the viewfinder as a teenager on a family holiday in Tunisia and for David Rafael Moulis it was a turning point. His camera eventually led him to Israel, as a member of a team from the Protestant Theological Faculty at Charles University. 

“I have always been fascinated by basic mechanisms and to understand how things work inside the cell,” says cell biologist Jiři Bártek, the most cited Czech scientist, awarded an honorary doctorate from Charles University in 2022.

CU students set for Winter Uni Games

In under a week, the Winter World University Games will kick off in Lake Placid, USA, where the Czech Republic, through the Czech Association of University Sports, will send a 142-member team comprising 93 athletes. Among them will be 12 students from Charles University.

The year in science at Charles University

Dictionary.com chose “woman” as its word of the year for 2022, an apt choice which could apply to Charles University. In February, for the first time in its history, the position of rector was taken up by a woman: professor and  scientist Milena Králíčková. The events of 2022 demonstrated the importance and necessity of science more than ever.

Associate Professor Jan Sýkora from the Institute of Asian Studies has been to Japan countless times and has dedicated more than 30 years to the study of the Japanese language and culture. This year, he received one of Japan’s highest honours.
