How did a country that exported oranges in the 1950s become a world leader in innovation, and can that success be replicated? This is what the participants of the 3rd Women's Mission to Israel, including Pavla Hubálková from Forum, found out.

A joint seed-funding programme between Charles University and the University of St Andrews is an excellent means of bringing together top researchers, say Joseph North from the elite Scottish university and Jaromír Soukup from strategic partner Charles University. We waste resources and throw away far too much food unnecessarily. The Smart Food educational project, aiming to improve pupils' knowledge about food waste, is being tested at five primary schools. The teaching materials should later be widely available.

“The era of superspecialists is coming to an end, the future belongs to graduates who can connect individual disciplines,” says biologist Jan Černý. That is why the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics agreed on a new Bachelor program called Science at CU.

Ivana Schnur graduated from the First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University and thought she would focus on pain management in oncology. But despite a few detours and “twists of fate”, she instead co-founded and runs Sensely a few years ago – a company that develops artificial intelligence to make nurses' and doctors' jobs easier.

Burning, tingling, and a loss of sensation in the fingers – these are common symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Students Vasil Kostin from the Third Faculty of Medicine of CU and Tomáš Trejdl from CTU are looking to prevent this occupational disease.

She has been called a dragon slayer and the world’s most famous regulator, but also a democrat dedicated to fairness in markets paving the way for innovation: Danish politician Margrethe Vestager, the EC's executive vice-president for digital transformation. Vestager was a keynote speaker on Monday at the Faculty of Law.

Charles University recently launched its new discovery service, UKAŽ, facilitating the simultaneous and smooth search of printed, digitised and electronic resources. The system was a complete redesign of its forerunner, integrating the catalogues of more than 60 CU libraries. Searching for books has never been more convenient.

Ten Czech scientists, in two main categories, received Neuron Awards on Tuesday at a gala ceremony at Prague’s National Museum. Three received the award for their lifelong contribution to science, while seven awards went to young researchers. Eight recipients have ties with, or work at, Charles University.

“It’s not so much about gaining knowledge. For me it’s mainly about participants outperforming themselves. It’s an experiential course in which students are pushed beyond their comfort zones,” says Jan Veselý. He’s guiding a cohort of creative students – his sixth round already – and “toughening them up.”

“At Kampus Hybernská we are offering all Charles University faculties and components a common space to meet each other as well as city partners or others in the application sphere,” says Marcel Kraus, project manager of Hyb4City since January of this year.

Charles University’s Centre for Knowledge and Technology Transfer is partnering with WIPO to hold an online Summer School this September. The school is an opportunity for participants to earn a prestigious credential from WIPO - a specialized agency of the United Nations.
